Greek Seas
back

Greece is situated in East Mediterranean, between Ionian Sea from the west and Aegean Sea from the south and the east.

For Greeks sea is the symbol of their Motherland. Sea, sky and sun are now the same as thousands years ago. Colors of the sea in Greece are very attractive- bright violet, turquoise and light blue.

Ionian Sea is the part of Mediterranean Sea between Balkan and Apenninskij peninsulas and islands- Crete and Sicily. Ionian Sea is connected with Adriatic Sea through Straight of Otranto and with Tyrrhenian Sea through Messinskij Strait. Total area of the Ionian Sea is 169 thousands sq. km; the max depth is 5121m which is the deepest place in Mediterranean Sea. Water temperature in February is from 14 °C up to 25, 5 °C in August. The level of salt is 38%. Tides are semi daily up to 0, 4 m. The most famous bays of Ionian Sea are Patriakos, Corinthian and Taranto. Ionian Sea combines perfect weather conditions for sailing, predictable warm breeze and beautiful Ionian Islands. Ionian Sea winds called "Maistros" are blowing from north-western direction during the summer.
Usually the route from one island to another lasts for only several hours. Ionian Sea is the ideal place for those who are learning how to yacht or for those who would like to get more experience.

Aegean Sea is also the part of Mediterranean Sea and is situated between Balkan Peninsula, Asia and Crete. Aegean Sea is connected with the Sea of Marmara through the Straight of Dardanelle. Total area of the Aegean Sea is 191 thousands sq.m; max depth is 2561 m. Aegean Sea is situated to the south and east of Greece. If you decide to sail here, it wouldn't be that much easy because of the weather. Aegean Sea winds are called «Meltemi». Those winds are very strong in July and August and their duration can last from 2 to 4 days. Direction and intensity of "Meltemi" winds depend on a region. For example, one of the strongest winds is close to the islands: Naxos and Paros. During summer time there are thousands of windsurfers on these islands. Fortunately, availability of strong winds is the only disadvantage of Aegean Sea. There are practically no shallows, tides and fogs. Here you can find everything for the perfect vacation on a yacht.

Total duration of the Greek coast is nearly 16000 km. The specialty of the Greek coast is its variety- long and beautiful beaches, natural harbors, deep bays, coastal caves surrounded by rocks. The sea here is very pure and clean. In 2007 428 beaches and 9 marines were awarded by "Blue flags". Now, Greece takes the second place among 49 European countries.
Picturesque Greek islands compose 20% from the total area of Greece and every single island is unique in its own way. Climate is very good in Greece: soft in winter and dry in summer. Greece with its various tides and archipelagos is considered to be paradise for yachting.

No matter if you come here for a vacation, yacht competition or traveling. Charter season starts in the beginning of March when the air temperature becomes higher than water temperature.
